Orthopedic treatment of Growing Patient with Skeletal Class III Malocclusion and Functional Asymmetry of the Mandible

Abstract
Functional asymmetry of the mandible may occur as the mandible is displaced laterally or anteroposteriorly when occlusal interference exists in the centric relation state. In particular, unilateral posterior crossbite and skeletal Class III malocclusion are more often associated with functional asymmetry than other types of malocclusions. In this case report, skeletal Class III relationship and functional asymmetry were corrected using a horseshoe appliance and a facemask. A clinically significant worsening in the skeletal discrepancy was not observed during a 2-year retention period despite the continuing growth of the mandible. Our results suggest that early detection and treatment of skeletal malocclusion related with functional displacement of the mandible might prevent deterioration of the malocclusion and dentofacial asymmetry
